Helpful Hints

  • Never cancel your health insurance until you have a replacement lined up and you have been approved.
  • Try to apply for a health insurance plan at least 3 weeks before you need it to be effective.
  • Take a look at your 'worst case scenario'. What are the maximum out of pocket costs that you could have?
  • Make sure your insurance company can't cancel your policy if you have large claims.
  • When you go for treatment, double check that both the doctor and the hospital/clinic are 'In Network'.
  • If you need after hours care, weigh up whether you need an ER or an Urgent Care Clinic. An average ER visit costs over $1000, whereas an average Urgent Care clinic costs $150.*
  • It can pay to have different family members on different health plans, even with different companies, if it fits their specific needs.

* 2008 Average costs according to BlueCross BlueShield.
